Massachusetts

Massachusetts General Hospital – Boston, MA

Dr. Liliana Bordeianou is the Chief, Colorectal Surgery Program at Mass General. Lieba Savitt is a Nurse Practitioner and Patient Access Coordinator for the Colorectal Surgery Center/ Pelvic Floor Disorders Service at Mass General. This site will provide a research based experience and may have opportunity for clinical exposure including shadowing during surgeries. Applicants to this site must commit to continuing the research during the academic year. Pre-Health Advising will select finalists for this site, and MGH will make the final acceptance decision.
Dr. Milena Weinstein is the program director and the research director for the fellowship of Female Pelvic Medicine  Reconstructive Surgery (FPMRS), commonly known as urogynecology, at Mass General Hospital. In addition, she is also  the co-chair for the Center for Pelvic Floor Disorders which is a consortium of multi-disciplinary providers who  specializes in female pelvic floor disorders. This site will primarily provide firsthand experiences with clinical research,  working closely with the team of pelvic floor disorder experts in FPMRS including the fellows and the attendings, as well  as possible clinical opportunities including shadowing in clinics and surgeries depending on the ongoing COVID-19  related restrictions. Applicants to this site must commit to continuing the research during the academic year. Pre-Health  Advising will select finalists for this site, and MGH will make the final acceptance decision.

Cambridge Health Alliance  -Cambridge, MA 

Dr. Ketan Sheth is the Chief of the Division of Gastrointestinal and General Surgery and Assistant Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School. Cambridge Health Alliance (CHA) is a vibrant, innovative health system that serves Boston’s metro-north region. Through its numerous community health centers and three campus hospital structure( Cambridge, Somerville, Everett). It collaborates closely with local governments and non-profits to improve health and reduce barriers to care. As a teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School, Harvard School of Public Health, Harvard School of Dental Medicine and Tufts University School of Medicine, CHA is committed to training and education at all levels. CHA is a leader in culturally competent health care and evaluates and manages social determinants of health. Students applying for this location should be ready to engage with these variables in today’s healthcare climate.  Students will shadow in the clinics, wards, and operating rooms. They will observe and participate in longitudinal care management of surgical patients. Applicants will also have elective time to shadow in a surgical subspecialty of their choice. Students may be shadowing at more than one campus during their time.

Stony Brook University Medical Hospital – Stony Brook, NY

Dr. Sbayi is the Director of the Emergency General Surgery Service, Program Director of the Mastery in General  Surgery Fellowship, and Deputy Chief Information Officer at Stony Brook University Hospital. This site will  provide shadowing opportunities on the Emergency General Surgery service, participation in research and data  mining in the Electronic Medical Record on projects relevant to the Emergency service and opportunities to be  part of quality and outcomes research presentations. Weekly commitment virtually and full-time commitment  during the summer is ideal. This opportunity can accommodate 2 students. We are able to also expose the  student to brief interactions with other specialties and services depending on student interest.

Long Island Jewish Medical Center – Queens, NY

Dr. Marc Sher is a colon/rectal surgeon and Associate Chairman of Surgery-Division of Colorectal Surgery at Long Island Jewish Medical Center. He is also the former president of the New York Surgical Society. This site will provide a clinical based shadowing experience. Things you may observe include a variety of surgeries. Additionally, you could have the opportunity to observe the doctor-patient interactions during pre-op and post-op appointments and see new patient appointments.

(Mainly) Mercy Medical Center, Rockville Centre, NY/ St. Joseph Hospital, Bethpage, NY

William J. Sonstein, M.D., F.A.C.S. is a Board-Certified Diplomate, American Board of Neurosurgery. He has a special interest in complex spine surgery and has one of the largest experiences with Posterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion (PLIF) on Long Island. This procedure relieves pain for patients with intractable back pain. This site will provide practice shadowing Dr. Sonsteinat his practice. You will get the ability to observe his day to day, and interactions with patients. You may have the opportunity to shadow his partners who specialize in brain surgery.Important to Note: There may be a third location you visit in NY with Dr. Sonstein, your schedule/ability to travel should be flexible because he works with many offices. As we finalize the location(s) you will be notified.

Surgery Group of Los Angeles – Los Angeles, CA

Dr. Yosef Nasseri is a founding member of The Surgery Group of Los Angeles, a Los Angeles based physician group providing a comprehensive approach to surgical care through advanced technology, long-term patient follow-up, and direct physician access. It is the largest multi-specialty surgery group in Los Angeles. The office is attached to and affiliated with Cedars Sinai hospital (the largest hospital on the west coast) along with other regional hospitals and surgery centers. Their specialties include: General Surgery, Colorectal Surgery, Surgical Oncology, Plastic Surgery and Podiatry. The surgeons treat a wide array of pathology and use the most up to date technology. Students will be able to shadow surgeons and participate in care of the patients in the office, in the hospital setting and in the various operating rooms.

Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center -Boston, MA

Dr. Cataldo who is Assistant Professor in Surgery at Harvard Medical School and on staff in  the Division of Colon and Rectal Surgery at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center is a tertiary and quaternary referral center for the most advanced medical  and surgical care available in New England. It also provides basic standard routine medical and surgical care for  those who needed.  His practice in the division of  colon and rectal surgery at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center runs the full range of practice of an  academic subspecialty surgeon. The type of conditions Dr.Cataldo treat includes common anorectal conditions, gastrointestinal disorders such as inflammatory bowel disease, diverticulitis and colon cancer. His routine interactions include a multidisciplinary group of additional  physicians including radiologists, pathologists, gastroenterologists, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists and  others.
